Activity Summary

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in critically ill children. The Pediatric Acute Lung Injury Consensus Conference (PALICC-2) provides data-driven recommendations for the diagnosis and management of pediatric ARDS (PARDS). Adherence to these guidelines is vital to improving PARDS recognition, management and outcomes. In this session, we examine key elements of diagnostic criteria critical for timely recognition and discuss strategies to promote individualized lung-protective ventilation as well as other adjunctive therapies.

Objectives

  • Review pathophysiology of pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS) and its impact on ventilation and oxygenation.
  • Identify three best strategies to prevent and/or manage patients with, or at risk for, PARDS.
  • Discuss key elements of individualized ventilatory support for patients with PARDS.
