Activity Summary

The history of using music in healthcare goes back millennia, though its standardized use in clinical therapy dates only to the mid 1940s. Today, there are nearly 10,000 MT-BCs across the United States, many of whom are working in medicine. The audience is engaged interactively as they increase their knowledge of music therapy and its evidence-based function in critical care, how it differentiates from supportive music and ways in which interdisciplinary team members can use bedside music to support patients.

Objectives

  • Define and differentiate music therapy and creative arts therapy and detail the Certification Board for Music Therapists’ requirements.
  • Discuss the clinical process/evidence-based interventions addressing cognitive, physical, psychological, emotional and sensory goals.
  • Identify the purpose and ethical application of bedside music.
