Activity Summary

Managing patients with severe traumatic brain injury and implementing interventions require ICU nurses to possess knowledge on the theory of TBI and technology used to assess intracranial dynamics, and to work as a team to integrate care across disciplines. Increased ICP and brain oxygenation must be measured; interventions used to enhance CBF/O2 delivery must be prioritized. This presentation focuses on the new guidelines and on integrating the evidence-based guidelines to categorize patients into severe, moderate or minor when managing severe TBI. Critical thinking algorithms are presented and applied to actual case studies.

Objectives

  • Assess the effects of injury to the brain in the neurologic-injured patient and implement strategies to manage severe TBI.
  • Reframe TBI severity using new proposed criteria and build new protocols for patient management.
  • Evaluate TBI patients using noninvasive and invasive multimodality monitoring and apply algorithms to manage patients.
