Activity Summary

Hearing about a critically ill obstetric patient frequently puts fear into the heart and soul of a critical care nurse. The incidence of critical illness during pregnancy is on the rise and presents unique management challenges. Pregnancy can be complicated by acute illness, and many women have pre-existing illnesses that impact pregnancy. Armed with knowledge about priorities in critical care obstetrics, nurses can courageously provide care that maximizes outcomes for both the pregnant woman and her child.

  • Discuss care management of the critically ill laboring patient.
  • Explain the care management of the critically ill postpartum patient.
