Activity Summary

Pediatric patients with mental health disorders require additional care considerations when admitted to the inpatient setting. Inpatient nurses often relate barriers to care of the mental health disorder to lack of comfortability in communication and confidence in performing screening and assessments. This session covers results of a performance excellence project with the aim of understanding barriers by eliciting the voice of the customer, seeking feedback from staff on the barriers to care of the mental health patient and developing PDSA (plan, do, study, act) cycles for improvement.

Objectives

  • Review literature on trending mental health disorders in the pediatric population.
  • Discuss comorbid mental health patients which require hospital stabilization in a small urban area.
  • Evaluate challenging case presentations and the considerations for management of care on the inpatient setting.
