Activity Summary

Heart failure is a chronic and progressive condition resulting in the inability of the heart to pump adequate blood to meet the body’s demands. The guideline-directed medical therapy, 4 pillars, (consisting of four classes of medications—BBs, ARNIs, MRAs, SGLT-2i) when used in combination is known to decrease all-cause mortality. This presentation discusses the pharmacology of the GDMT in detail so nurses and advanced practice providers have a strong foundational knowledge to provide effective GDMT teaching for HFrEF patients to improve self-management and adherence. Pharmacology content = 75%

Objectives

  • Describe a brief overview of the pathophysiology of heart failure with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (HFrEF).
  • Summarize the current literature on guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT or the 4 pillars) for HFrEF.
  • Identify patient education nurses can provide to improve patient's self management and therapy adherence for HFrEF.
