Activity Summary

As acute and critical care nurses, we know the importance of skilled communication and how essential it is to achieve a healthy work environment. But in the reality of our fast-paced, high-stress environments, we’ve all had moments of engaging in less-than-optimal communication and seen the adverse impacts on our patients, families, colleagues and ourselves. This interactive session provides strategies and tools to communicate effectively and build relationships—even when under pressure.

Objectives

  • Describe the role of skilled communication in supporting healthy work environments in healthcare settings.
  • Discuss the impact of high-stress situations on cognitive function, decision making and communication skills.
  • Develop strategies to enhance trust and credibility in communication—even under pressure.
