Activity Summary

According to the World Health Organization, there are 2.5 million deaths per year related to hemorrhagic trauma, and hemorrhage related to trauma remains the leading cause of preventable death. Recent innovative research concerning trauma-induced coagulation informs improved guidelines and protocols to support hemostasis. This session discusses these new guidelines and protocols, including modification to the ABCs of resuscitation, an addition to the so-called lethel triad, changes in the time and dose of medications and the emergence of whole blood during pre- and in-hospital resuscitation.

Objectives

  • Develop the nurse’s proficiency in their assessment and treatment of patients with trauma-induced coagulopathy.
  • Demonstrate knowledge from current evidence-based guidelines for safe administration of whole blood products during trauma resuscitation.
  • Examine the importance of new protocols with three medications that benefit the patient during hemostatic resuscitation.
