Activity Summary

This session addresses misconceptions of ICU recovery, definition and risk factors for development of post ICU syndrome (PICS). Discussion of evidence-based nursing interventions to prevent or reduce PICS during the ICU includes a review of guideline recommendations for bedside and for APRNs to manage pain, agitation and sedation. All levels of nursing are challenged to educate patients and families and place referrals to a post ICU recovery clinic. Elements of starting an advanced practice provider-led post ICU recovery clinic are presented.

Objectives

  • Identify misconceptions of ICU recovery; describe post intensive care syndrome (PICS) and nursing interventions to reduce the risk of PICS.
  • List guideline-recommended agents to treat pain, agitation, sedation and delirium according to patient-specific conditions.
  • Describe the interdisciplinary resources necessary to provide follow-up care when assessing and treating PICS.
