Activity Summary

Midsternal wound infection following cardiac surgery is a potentially deadly, costly and ultimately preventable complication. Critical care nurses are at the helm of patient-centered care and, thus, are perfectly positioned to champion infection prevention. The need for and creation of a nursing-driven bundle is discussed during the presentation. A step-by-step approach using the CSI model provides insights so participants can apply the team’s toolkit in their clinical environment.

Objectives

  • Review the literature on sternal wound prevention bundles and their financial implications.
  • Identify key components used within the nursing sphere to develop and implement a nursing bundle.
  • Discuss challenges with implementing the nurse-driven bundle across multiple disciplines.
