Activity Summary

Within a period of only 6 months, the number of hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) on our units is down 65%. Pressure injuries negatively impact patient’s lives due to increased pain and length of stay and risk of infection. Additionally, hospital costs rise due to resources such as supplies and nursing care. This session explores how an innovative change project led to the significant decrease in pressure injuries in cardiothoracic surgery patients.

Objectives

  • Discuss the rationale for increased risk of pressure injuries in cardiothoracic surgery patients.
  • Devise a guideline for preventing pressure injuries to reduce the number of HAPIs.
  • Examine the strategies to prevent, identify and manage skin injuries.
