Activity Summary

In the United States, 5.7 million patients are treated in the intensive care unit; approximately half of these patients develop muscle weakness, leading to increased length of hospital stay. As nurses in the cardiac intensive care unit (CICU), we know it is important to promote increased early mobility to prevent this. The facilitator uses audiovisual tools and interactive cooperation to establish effective use of a mobility tool. At the end of this session, participants are well versed in methods to increase mobility through collaboration.

Objectives

  • Analyze the effects of increased mobility on critical care patients in relation to length of stay.
  • Assess essential components used to implement a standardized mobility tool.
  • Develop fundamental elements necessary for true collaboration.
