Activity Summary

Intra-abdominal hypertension frequently occurs in critically ill patients. Elevated intra-abdominal hypertension has adverse effects on many organ systems, including the cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal and nervous systems. This presentation provides the critical care nurse with the knowledge to minimize morbidity and mortality related to abdominal compartment syndrome.

Objectives

  • Identify patients with risk factors for developing intra-abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndrome.
  • Describe the effects of elevated intra-abdominal hypertension on different organ systems.
  • Consider different interventions used to reduce the negative effects of intra-abdominal hypertension on different organ systems.
