Guideline Update: Addressing Immobility and Sleep Disruption

This webinar is the second in a two-part series discussing application of the 2018 PADIS guidelines (“Clinical Practice guidelines for the Prevention and Management of Pain, Agitation/Sedation, Delirium, Immobility and Sleep Disruption in Adult Patients in the ICU”) to critical care nursing practice. The updated PADIS guidelines incorporate recommendations related to enhancing patient mobility and sleep. In this webinar, Brenda Pun – a leader in ABCDEF bundle implementation and 2018 PADIS guidelines committee member – explores the guidelines’ recommendations for managing immobility and sleep disruption. Pun will also present a case study and discuss integrating mobility and sleep promotion as part of the ABCDEF bundle. A separate on-demand webinar from Feb. 2019 reviews the guideline recommendations for pain, agitation and delirium.

Objectives

Discuss how the five components of the new PADIS guidelines (pain, agitation, delirium, immobility and sleep disruption) are interrelated.
Apply the criteria for starting or stopping mobilization to the care of patients in your unit.
Identify two factors that commonly disrupt sleep for patients in the intensive care unit and at least one strategy for mitigating each one.

Presenter

Brenda T Pun, DNP,RN

Brenda Truman Pun, DNP, RN, is an advanced practice nurse with a special interest in critical care. She conducts and participates in patient-oriented, health services research at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Pun received a bachelor’s degree from Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, West Virginia, a master degree in nursing from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and a doctor of nursing practice degree from University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. She serves as a program clinical manager in the Vanderbilt Coordinating Center, where she is involved in the creation and design of studies, grant writing, data collection and analysis, and communication of results. Her research has focused on improving the care and outcomes of critically ill patients with a special emphasis on delirium, sedation, long-term outcomes and teamwork.
