Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

In this retrospective case report, we describe our experience caring for a 6-year-old girl who received VA-ECMO in a tertiary children’s hospital in Shanghai, China, and had delirium for 6 days. We provide insight for critical care nurses regarding the use of non-pharmacologic care bundles including delirium screening, analgesia and sedation management, sleep promotion, and family participation.

Objectives

  • Identify the delirium screening in children with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.
  • Describe the clinical manifestations of delirium in a pediatric patient undergoing veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.
  • Describe 4 non-pharmacologic interventions bedside nurses use to care for a child with delirium.
