Description
Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) is a lifesaving therapy frequently used in critically ill patients with acute kidney injury, fluid overload, severe electrolyte abnormalities, sepsis, medication overdose, and hemodynamic instability. This educational activity provides nurses with a practical review of CRRT fundamentals, including indications for therapy, treatment modalities, vascular access considerations, pressure monitoring, and blood flow management. Through case studies and real-world clinical scenarios, learners will explore common CRRT alarms, differentiate between clotting and clogging, and apply evidence-based troubleshooting strategies to maintain circuit patency and optimize patient outcomes. Participants will gain knowledge and confidence to recognize and respond to access, venous, and filter-related complications while supporting safe and effective CRRT management in the critical care setting.
Alyssa Eberwein, MSN RN CCRN
Alyssa Eberwein is the Clinical Practice Director of Education for Critical Care at Virtua Health in Southern New Jersey, where she leads and supports nurse educators across intensive and progressive care units. With a background in critical care nursing, she has extensive experience caring for patients requiring advanced therapies, including Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT). As an ICU nurse educator, Alyssa developed a comprehensive CRRT curriculum focused on core concepts, troubleshooting, and line management. She is passionate about advancing nursing practice through education, competency development, and evidence-based care. In her current role, she promotes professional development, supports nurse educators, and drives initiatives that enhance clinical excellence and improve patient outcomes.
Learners must complete the entire activity and the associated evaluation to be awarded contact hours AND read Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes. No partial credit will be awarded.
