ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — July 2, 2024 – The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) recently appointed Lakshman Swamy, MD, MBA, physician co-editor-in-chief of American Journal of Critical Care (AJCC), its interdisciplinary, scientific journal.
Swamy is a pulmonary and critical care physician, providing in-patient care at Cambridge Health Alliance in the Boston area and serving as chief pulmonologist for Monogram Health, which offers patient-centered in-home care for patients with polychronic conditions in over 35 states. He also teaches at Harvard Medical School and holds an appointment as an assistant professor, population and quantitative health sciences, at University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School.
He becomes the journal’s fifth physician co-editor-in-chief, succeeding Aluko Hope, MD, MSCE. In his role, Swamy will work closely with Co-Editor-in-Chief Cindy Munro, PhD, RN, ANP, who has been with AJCC since 2009. Together, they will coordinate peer review of submitted manuscripts, co-byline editorials and steward AJCC, AACN’s flagship research journal.
“AJCC stands out for its dedication to original research relevant to interdisciplinary teams in critical care settings, and I am honored to work alongside Dr. Munro, the journal’s long-standing nurse editor,” Swamy said. “Its most cited and widely read articles focus on the patient and clinician experience in critical care. Key themes include clinician burnout, end-of-life care considerations, and clinical problems I encounter frequently in the intensive care unit.”
In his spare time, Swamy raised over $75,000 to support the creation of Critical Care: The Game, a card game that teaches the public about hospital medicine. He manages all aspects of operations for the creation of the game from initial design through crowdfunding and, now, printing and distribution.
Swamy earned his business and medical degrees from Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine, Dayton, Ohio. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care at Boston Medical Center.
Swamy’s inaugural editorial in AJCC, “Climate Change and the Intensive Care Unit,” is published in the July 2024 issue of the award-winning, peer-reviewed journal. To access the editorial, visit the AJCC website at www.ajcconline.org.
