Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

A US RN sustains a sudden traumatic event while abroad touring with her husband and is left paralyzed from the chest down. An ICU Team/hospital unites/rise together to bring our nurse home collaborating with CR ICU Team and overcoming complex barriers while her husband navigates a foreign medical system and shares their story with the press to help bring his wife home. Join members of the team, the patient-Deanne Niedziella and her husband Ken Niedziella as they use storytelling to chronicle the journey of healing.

Objectives

  • Relate the physiological insult of spinal cord injury and the impact on body systems to critical care priorities
  • Describe the complex elements of negotiating with insurance, benefits, & funding to support medivac extraction/ transfer back to the US
  • Identify the benefits of story retelling on patient/family/team healing following a traumatic event
