Activity Summary

This session describes the often life-threatening consequences of penetrating or blunt thoracic trauma. Any of the multitude of organs or critical vessels in the thoracic cavity can be injured by either of these mechanisms with damaging, disastrous effects. Attendees at this intermediate-level session learn about common thoracic injuries and how to rapidly assess and manage them. In addition, complications associated with chest trauma are reviewed in depth, and prevention strategies analyzed.

Objectives

  • Review the current etiology and prevalence of thoracic trauma, especially in U.S. urban environments.
  • Identify the current recommendations for identifying the mechanism of chest injury, likely patterns and associated consequences.
  • Analyze current practices for management of severe thoracic injuries and prevention of complications associated with this type of trauma.
